History - learning about the past.

History Vision

At Westminster CofE Primary Academy, we believe in providing our children with meaningful and diverse learning experiences, which build their passion for learning and allow them to lead a fulfilled life.

The History curriculum is designed to enable children to learn about the past through first-hand learning experiences, which promote dialogue and discussion. We recognise the importance of children discovering for themselves and the need to develop independent and enquiring learners.

Our curriculum develops the four key learning strands of investigating and interpreting the past, building an overview of world history, developing an understanding of chronology and communicating historically.

We recognise each child’s prior learning and provide a safe, inspiring and nurturing environment in which children can challenge themselves to develop a deep, non-biased, well-rounded understanding of the past. Our children will gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past as well as their own heritage, including migration to Bradford, the Partition of India and the role of Bradford in the First World War.

We will inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh up evidence and develop perspective and judgement. We will help our children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
