Curriculum at Westminster CE Primary Academy

Our curriculum at Westminster Primary will provide children with the knowledge and lifelong skills, including Reading, Writing, Numeracy and Speaking, which they need to become confident, independent and successful individuals who are equipped to succeed in the next stage of their education and thrive in later life.  This is particular important for children with English as an additional Language who attend Westminster Academy.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure children have access to a broad and balanced experience. Each subject is planned carefully, personalised to the children attending Westminster Academy and to have clear progression in skills and knowledge, providing rich learning experiences. This starts with the local area of Bradford and travels beyond to Europe and to the rest of the world.  Our aim is for children to be proud to be from Bradford and celebrate their cultural backgrounds through carefully chosen units, including the partition of India and Pakistan.

Children will be given opportunities to be inquisitive, develop a thirst for knowledge, a love of learning and develop an open enquiring mind. Our curriculum will encourage children to ask questions, not being passive learners and enabling the children to become active in their own learning.

Following our Christian values, and through our Religious Education, PSHE and collective worship, the curriculum will provide enrichment opportunities and encourage children to be tolerant, accepting of diversity and enable them to work together.   This will build social cohesion and have legacy within the local Bradford community and beyond.

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all children reach or exceed their potential regardless of their background, social disadvantage or SEND need.

Our curriculum is set out in a curriculum overview document, year group plans and subject long term plans. The curriculum has been mapped carefully to the national curriculum and progression of skills has been planned and end of unit and yearly milestones have been identified.

Each subject in the curriculum has a designated subject leader who has an overview of their subject, including a vision statement, how the subject is going to be assessed and how their subject is going to be assessed.

Each subject leader with have an evidence file, programme of monitoring.

Our school provides a significant number of enrichment activities to develop children’s cultural capital.

Please see our equality objectives and accessibility plan for more info on how we comply with our duties under the Equality Act and SEND Regulations to ensure our curriculum is accessible for all.

BDAT Curriculum Approach

Our mission is “to provide high quality education within the context of Christian belief and practice so that every child can fulfil their academic potential and accomplish their individual goals”. We firmly believe that every child has only one chance to receive a good education and they deserve that education to be the best it possibly can be. The Trust, our family of schools, staff and our pupils are driven by a set of shared values (Aspiration, Inclusion, Excellence, Compassion and Resilience) which guide how we operate, how we teach and how we support each other.

Further information can be found on the BDAT website.

For more information about our curriculum, please contact Simon Gallacher via the school office.
